On the Nose

2 oz Gin <Short Path>
1/2 oz St. Germain
1/4 oz Green Chartreuse
1/4 oz Lime Juice

Shake with ice, strain into an ice filled rocks glass, garnish with lime peel.

It’s been upwards of 90 degrees here in Boston of late, so this week I wanted something light and refreshing.  I grabbed my journal and thumbed through the pages, looking for only drinks on the rocks.  This made me realize two things.  1) I should start using symbols to show how drinks are served (Mr. Boston does this wonderfully, with a little picture of the glass type next to each drink).  2) Apparently I really like up drinks (Is it too late for a retroactive New Year’s resolution to make more drinks on the rocks?).  Despite the lack of distribution in my recipes, I managed to find a suitable warm weather tipple.

Often when I use St. Germain, I employ a lighter hand because it can take over a drink.  When I came up with this drink, I wanted it’s trademark sweet, florally flavors and thicker body to shine through.  To keep it in check, I called in another big personality.  Green Chartreuse is not shy, and I already knew it pairs amazingly with gin from the many Last Words I’ve had.  Drawing again on my extensive Last Word experience (read: I drink them a lot), I added some lime juice for a citrusy edge to combat the sweetness from the St. Germain.

On the Nose isn’t named because it’s an obvious reference to something.  The name captures how this drink is an olfactory party.  Botanicals abound from gin, St. Germain, and Green Chartreuse.  I especially like how the floral side of the Chartreuse comes out more as it tries to keep up with the St. Germain.  Its herbaceousness (let’s just pretend that’s a word) is tempered, with only the cooling mint notes sticking around. Tart lime juice crisps everything up and snaps the drink to attention.   Poured over ice, this drink is a boozy shield for those muggy, sweltering days.  If this kind of weather keeps up, I might even add a splash of soda for some extra fizzy refreshment.
