Few dashes Peach Bitters [Fee Bros.]

Friday and Saturday nights in the Muddle household are usually a mixed bag of finding drinks from other ‘grammers/bloggers, leafing through the various cocktail books on my shelf, or staring at my bar and getting down to some good ol’ R&D.  Admittedly, this last option can be a bit hit or miss, but every now and then my efforts yield a worthy cocktail. Mixology Monday: Irish Wake


O’Malley’s Alley

2 oz Irish Whiskey [Grand Ten]
1/2 oz Blanc Vermouth [Dolin]
1/4 oz Becherovka
1/4 oz Benedictine

Stir with ice, strain into a chilled cocktail glass.  Squeeze lemon peel over drink, garnish with lemon twist.


I write this post with a bit of a heavy heart.  For you see, this is the last ever Mixology Monday.  After taking the reins over 4 years ago, our fearless leader Frederic Yarm has mxmologodeemed it time to end this lovely tradition.  The universe apparently has conspired against him, with waning participation in the last year foreshadowing the final nail in the coffin; the website has locked out Frederic from making any more changes.  Thus, he declared the final theme to be an Irish wake to give MxMo a proper send off.  Specifically, we are tasked with writing about a drink featuring Irish whiskey, to which I solemnly oblige.

Valentine’s Day, Straight from the Bunny’s Mouth


Unisphere

3/4 oz Ligth Rum [Boston Harbor Distilling Lawley’s Light]
3/4 oz Dark Rum [Plantation Original Dark]
1/2 oz Lime Juice
1/2 Grenadine [Powell & Mahoney]
1/4 oz Benedictine
1/4 oz Pernod [I used Absinthe]

Combine all ingredients, shake with ice. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with lime heart.

I knew I wanted to do a drink for Valentine’s Day, but I wasn’t sure what angle to take.  Last year I did the whole chocolate (read: creme de cacao) thing, so that was out.  Then a friend lent me his copy of Playboy’s Host & Bar Book.  As I flipped through the pages, I realized this was the perfect thing for a holiday tangentially related to love, with a healthy dose of sex thrown in. Coffee Toffee Goodness


House Money

2 oz Dark or Aged Rum* [Plantation]
3/4 oz Benedictine
1/4 oz Orgeat [Fee Bros]
More than a few healthy dashes Coffee-Pecan Bitters (I imagine chocolate bitters would work here too)

Stir ingredients with ice, strain into an ice filled rocks glass

*  The original incarnation used Plantation Original Dark, and was tasty in its own right. Recently I picked up a bottle of their 5 year Aged Rum, and it made itself right at home in this glass. Feel free to use either kind


As I mentioned for the Thoroughly Polite Dustup, I took my first stab at homemade bitters this fall.  I used my apple bitters for that drink.  The other was batch I made was coffee-pecan (shoutout to Brad Thomas Parsons and his Bitters book for the recipes), and I couldn’t wait to get those in a cocktail.  Luckily just after they were glass-ready, my sister and her significant other came to visit.  Being mid-October, we got our fire pit ablaze and needed some drinks complete the fall setting.

Stir, Yes Stir!


Kentucky Sergeant

2 oz Bourbon <Woodford Reserve>
3/4 oz Benedictine
1/4 oz St. Germain
Few dashes Peach Bitters * <Fee Bros.>

Stir with ice, strain into an ice filled rocks glass

* When I first made this drink, I didn’t use any bitters.  However, I’ve come to realize most bitters work pretty well with it, so use whatever you have on hand.  Or use none at all.


News flash: I love brown spirits.  You can give me all the whiskies, and I’ll be just fine.  And don’t stop there.  Cognacs and brandies are always welcome in my home.  Maybe that’s why I love Benedictine so much.  Combine this liqueur with any brown base spirit, and you’re almost guaranteed a delicious drink. Mixology Monday CXIII: Breakfast Club


Breakfast in America

2 oz Tennessee Whiskey
3/4 oz Becherovka
1/2 oz Benedictine
1/4 oz Cinnamon Maple Simple Syrup
Few dashes Coffee Pecan Bitters
1 whole egg

Combine everything is an empty shaker, vigorously dry shake to combine.  Add ice, shake again.  Strain into an empty rocks glass*.  Garnish with shaved cinnamon and whiskey soaked raisins.


The holidays are fast approaching, which means lots of family time, whether they’re coming to you or vice versa.  While the dinners are often the focal point, Gary of the Doc Elliott realizes extended stays mean breakfasts and brunches happen too.  And as we all mxmologonew, a little day drinking always helps bring the family together. That’s why his theme for this month’s Mixology Monday is brunch cocktails.  You can read the full announcement post here, but three words sum it up.  Bacon, Eggs, and Booze.

Wedding Favor

1 1/4 oz Rye Whiskey <Rittenhouse>
1 oz Apple Cider
1/2 oz Benedictine
1/4 oz Cointreau
1/8 oz (1 barspoon) Maple Syrup
Few dashes Angostura Bitters

Shake ingredients with ice, strain into a rocks glass filled with ice.  Garnish with an apple fan.


Two years ago this past Tuesday, two of my good friends got married.  We’ve been friends for almost 10 years, and shared many a drink at each other’s houses or out on the town.  It wasn’t a huge surprise when they asked me to create a drink for their rehearsal dinner, despite the fact I hadn’t even started this blog yet.  But it was a big responsibility, one that I was excited to take on.

1/2 oz Amaro Montenegro
1/4 oz St. Germain
Hopped Grapefruit Bitters <Bittermen’s>

Stir with ice, strain into rocks glass over ice.  Garnish with strawberry wheel.
