Get to the Root of this Whiskey

Hot Mic

1 1/2 oz Ginger Whiskey [Misunderstood Whiskey]
3/4 oz House Blackberry Cinnamon shrub
1/2 oz Licor 43
1/4 oz Lemon Juice

Shake with ice, strain into an ice filled rocks glass.  Garnish with crystalized ginger and blackberries.

My parents really seem to have this whole retirement thing down pretty well.  They are pros at keeping themselves busy.  Adult education classes at local colleges, random performances in and around town, along with traditional hobbies like biking, knitting, and reading all fill their day.  Real talk though, the activity that gets me most excited about retirement is their wine, beer, and booze tasting circuit.   Continue reading

Whiskey from the Left Coast

Jungle Primary

2 oz CALI Whiskey [CALI Distillery]
.5 oz Amaro Nonino
.5 oz House Blackberry Cinnamon Shrub

Stir with ice, strain into an ice filled rocks glass.  Garnish with blackberries.

A few weeks ago the people behind Sukkah Hill Spirits sent me some of their latest venture, a foray into the whiskey world.  They dubbed their CALI Whiskey as a “California twist on the classic American sipping whiskey.”    Being card carrying member of the brown spirits fan club, I couldn’t wait to crack it open. Ease into the Nightcap

Governing Body

1 1/2 oz Rock and Rye [New York Distilling Company]
1/2 oz House Strawberry Basil Black Peppercorn Shrub
1/2 oz Zucca
1/2 oz Punt e Mes

Stir with ice, strain into an ice filled rocks glass.

A few months ago we had some friends over for game night (and cocktails of course). As the night was winding down, one of my friends wanted one more drink, but something on the low ABV side of things. Normally I’m a stiff, boozy nightcap kind of guy, so I was excited to get out of my comfort zone and focus on the other side of the spectrum.

Fridge Find

Cruise Ship Magician

2 oz Pisco [Macchu Pisco]
.5 oz House Strawberry Basil Black Peppercorn Shrub
.5 oz Becherovka
Fresh mint

Gently muddle some mint in the bottom of a mixing glass.  Add remaining ingredients, stir with ice, strain into an ice filled rocks glass.  Garnish with mint sprig

One of the more enjoyable parts of home cocktailing is making my own mixers.  Syrups, shrubs, bitters and the like are all fun little projects.  Sometimes, I get a little ahead of myself, and make too many at once.  Well, not really too many – but I’ve been known to have a few random jars scattered throughout the fridge. Summer’s Bounty

Fauxsé

1 1/2 oz Gin [Bully Boy]
1/2 oz Licor 43
1/2 oz Dry Curacao [Pierre Ferrand]
1/2 oz House Strawberry Basil Black Peppercorn Shrub

Stir ingredients with ice, strain into a chilled cocktail glass.  Garnish with basil sprig.

Ahh summer.  Between farmer’s markets, variety of in store produce, and pick-your-own options a bound, a great season for the cocktail lover.  Last year after a strawberry picking outing, I made a strawberry shrub which, unsurprisingly, didn’t last very long.  Flipping through my cocktail journal I came upon one of the recipes I created with it.   Continue reading
